Your 5 favorite horse movies

A while ago, I asked you on Instagram which horse movies you particularly like. The result wasn't all that surprising; here's the first part:

  1. By far the most votes went to the old Immenhof films. Who doesn't know and love them? The first installments were made in the mid-1950s, two later installments in the 1970s. They tell the story of two sisters, Dick and Dalli, who live with their grandmother on a beautiful estate in Schleswig-Holstein, surrounded by horses and ponies. A first-class regional and horse film. Since 2012, the original filming location, Gut Rothensande, has been undergoing extensive restoration and is scheduled to open as a hotel in 2021. We're excited. Who wouldn't want to spend some time on vacation at Gut Immenhof? "Trippel trappel trippel trappel Pony!"
  2. Also right up there was the film "Hidalgo: 3000 Miles to Glory." Whether the story is true, half-true, or just made up is debatable, but the adventure itself is quite captivating. The 2004 film, starring Viggo Mortensen, is a bold reinterpretation of old Western clichés. I really enjoyed it, and the horses were all so beautiful!
  3. I hadn't previously heard of the 2013 French film "Jappeloup – A Legend," about the story of former French show jumper Pierre Durand and his exceptional horse, Jappeloup de Luze. But I immediately filled that gap in my knowledge and really enjoyed the film. It shows me again that great things can also come from recreational sports, and that sometimes you just meet horses in life. It's not love at first sight, but if you let it happen, a unique partnership can develop. We all know that, right?
  1. The classic, and one you often mention, is of course "The Horse Whisperer," starring and directed by Robert Redford. We horse people know that Monty Roberts was the inspiration for the main character, and even if the ending isn't what Roberts would have wanted, we all love this film! It did a lot of work to help the non-horse world understand what horsemanship means. It's also a tribute to the fact that two wounded and misunderstood souls can become one again! Incidentally, it's also a film that has sparked great enthusiasm among non-horse people as well.
  2. Not a feature film, but still a truly equestrian film: "Trakehner - The King's Last Horses." No horse breed is viewed with as much nostalgia in Germany as the Trakehner. It is, after all, one of the oldest horse breeds known in the world. The documentary traces the special history of the East Prussian horse breed, both then and now. A must-see for Trakehner lovers, and for everyone else, a truly well-made horse documentary about horse breeding today, using the Trakehner as an example.

What other films do you know and can you recommend?
